Statement

A fascination with childhood influences and how they shape personality and identity has been a significant factor in my work and portraiture. In children, I find that there are often fewer layers between their surface and their soul, allowing a glimpse into a long-forgotten inner world for adults. Perhaps due to frequent, early exposure to symbolism and ideology, my creative language and more conceptual work tend toward the metaphorical. I endeavor to examine physical realities as portents of psychological states, precarious connections among dissonant cognitions, and layered relationships of meaning. Other themes explored include the domestic life of families and individuals, environmental concerns, women’s issues, and the natural world. I incorporate film, digital, and occasionally mixed media elements in my process.
